Being a teenager is a complex experience: you’re no longer and child and you’re in the process of becoming an adult. With school and exams, sports and scoreboards, dating and hanging out with friends, your teeth shouldn’t be a concern. Invisalign Teen® is designed to ease the tough environment teenagers find themselves in, allowing them to live a life with a full, confident smile. This new and exciting just-for-teens addition to the Invisalign family is a series of custom-made, clear plastic aligners that straighten your teeth without the restrictions or appearance of metal braces.
According to research conducted by toothpaste manufacturer Colgate, approximately 3 million teenagers wear braces. Braces are used to correct tooth and jaw alignment, including overbites, underbites, crossbites and crowding. Invisalign works to successfully treat alignment issues as well. Made from a firm and flexible material, most alignment issues can be resolved using this technology, which is one of the reasons that it has become so popular. All your teen needs to do is wear these transparent aligners, over their teeth to gradually move them to the ideal position.
Dr. Scramstad will typically recommend changing Invisalign trays about every two weeks. It’s important that your teen is responsible and can keep track of these changes, and that he or she can attend ortho appointments every four to eight weeks for check ups. For best results, Invisalign aligners must be worn for 20-22 hours a day, and may only be removed for meals and cleaning.
The most serious complaints about metal braces are their potential for sports injuries (cutting, scraping), getting food stuck, and the fact that many people don’t find them aesthetically pleasing. A major advantages of Invisalign Teen® is that unlike traditional metal braces it is almost invisible, and the wearer barely feels like the braces are on their teeth. Invisalign braces are comfortable and removable, and the wearer also faces no dietary restrictions; he or she can simply remove the braces and eat and drink whatever they want.
Your teen will need all of their adult teeth before being fitted with Invisalign; if he or she still has baby teeth or not all their molars have grown through then they will need to be fitted with traditional braces. Invisalign Teen® cannot correct serious dental problems, such as major tooth adjustments or bridgework, and is usually (though not always) the slightly more expensive option. But can you really put a price on a perfect smile?
The first step to finding out which option is best for your teen is to schedule an appointment with your local orthodontist.
