How Does Invisalign Teen Work? 11 Things to Know

May 31 / 2017

Adolescence is a period of time we all have to go through. Whether you’re going through the awkward stage now, or you’re the parent of a child who is, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. It’s called turning 20.

With everything a teenager goes through, worrying about their smile shouldn’t be one of them. That’s where Invisalign Teen comes in.

Invisalign clear aligners straighten your smile without interrupting your life.

Align Ortho has written about Invisalign Teen previously, but we thought it'd be beneficial to write this FAQ checklist. New information is always being released, so it's important we stay current for our readers.

Here are 11 things you need to know about Invisalign Teen before booking your consultation.

1. What is Invisalign Teen?

Invisalign Teen is a virtually invisible way to straighten your teeth. Rather than metal brackets and wires, Invisalign uses customized clear, removable aligners. The aligners should be only removed when eating, drinking and brushing your teeth. Every two weeks you get a new set. Little by little, your teeth will shift into place, achieving your dream smile.

2. How does Invisalign work?

Aligners are custom-made for your teeth. Over the course of treatment, you're supplied with a series of sequentially designed aligners.

Aligners move the teeth through controlled force. Dr. Scramstad, the orthodontic provider for Align Ortho, prescribes the force level and the timing of its application. During each stage, only certain teeth can move. When you reach your last set of aligners, you will reach your dream smile.

3. What are some advantages of Invisalign teen?

The biggest advantage that comes with Invisalign is the fact that you can remove them. This allows you to continue playing sports without the worry of being hit in the mouth by a ball. You can also continue playing musical instruments at ease.

Another advantage of Invisalign Teen is that you can continue eating your favourite foods. With braces, there are a lot of goodies you’re supposed to stay away from and we mean a lot! Instead of depriving yourself of your favourite foods, remove your aligners and chow down.

4. Is Invisalign as effective as metal braces?

The simple answer is yes! Invisalign is as effective as traditional braces. Invisalign says their aligners can treat underbites, overbites, overcrowding and gaps between teeth.

Dr. Scramstad can determine if Invisalign is right for you during a consultation.

5. How much does Invisalign cost?

The cost will depend on the treatment required. During an initial consultation, Dr. Scramstad will discuss costs and payment plan options.

Be sure to check your family’s dental insurance plan as treatment is often partially covered.

6. Who is eligible for Invisalign teen?

Any teenager who is in need of dental treatment may be eligible for Invisalign Teen. But, Dr. Scramstad has to check each patient’s specific dental issues to determine the best course of care.

7. How long does Invisalign take?

The length of treatment depends on the teenager’s teeth. A free consultation will provide an answer to how long the treatment would take.

8. Does a teenager have to wear Invisalign all the time?

No! The best results happen when a teenager wears their aligners for 20-22 hours a day. That's four hours a day of teeth freedom.

9. What happens if an aligner gets lost?

If you happen to somehow lose an aligner, call Align Ortho right away. Being fitted for your replacement aligner as soon as possible allows for your treatment schedule not to change.

10. Can Invisalign change a teen’s self-confidence?

A study conducted by Invisalign says that a teenager’s self-esteem could be negatively affected by braces. Research shows that more than half of youth surveyed (54%) said braces would make them more self-conscious and one in two teens (50%) would smile less.

By eliminating braces, Invisalign is offering teenagers a dental work invisibility cloak. They can get straight teeth, while never having to worry about smiling. This removes a potential source of real anxiety and lowered self-esteem.

11. How much time will be spent in a dentist’s chair?

Invisalign has no adjustments to make and no broken wires to fix. After the initial appointment, follow-up appointments are approximately every four to six weeks. These appointments will be to customize your future aligners.
