Getting Braces as an Adult: 6 Tips on Handling It

Sep 29 / 2017

It has been decided… you’re finally taking the plunge and meeting with Align Ortho in Kelowna to talk about getting braces as an adult.

While it may seem a bit daunting to straighten your teeth during your adult career, and you might be scared of embarrassing middle school flashbacks, the risk is worth the reward.

It’s normal to feel apprehensive, but knowing these valuable tips will help make the choice easy for you.

1. Do you research

There are a lot of different options out there for straightening your teeth. During your first consultation with Dr. Scramstad, he will tell you what option is best for the treatment you need. There are traditional metal braces, clear braces or Invisalign, which are clear aligners that can be taken out.

To get an idea of the different treatments, download our exclusive comparison chart. We break down the different options, pros and cons of each and Dr. Scramstad adds his personal knowledge on the treatments too.

2. Pay attention to the benefits

While you may be worried, to ease those thoughts, focus on the benefits. Your teeth have always been something you wanted to fix, but with your family’s health as the first priority,  your teeth were put on the back burner. Now it’s your turn.

Your straight teeth will not only help your confidence at home, but it will also improve your work confidence. Feeling happy with your straight teeth will leave you smiling at work and during presentations. Soon everyone will be complimenting you on your straight teeth.

3. Find the right orthodontic provider

It’s important for you to find the right orthodontic provider. They’re the person who will be doing your consultation, treatment and will be answering any questions you have.

Dr. Scramstad’s father founded Align Ortho in Kelowna in 1981. James decided to continue the family tradition and enrolled in the University of Alberta to obtain his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Dental Surgery degrees. James started working full-time at Align Ortho in 1996.

4. Get ready for teeth maintenance

Braces or aligners need to be cleaned every single day. The metal wires on braces make it easy for food to get stuck and the Invisalign aligners need to be cleaned so they don’t stain with the food you’re eating.

We know you enjoy a cup of coffee at work and maybe even a glass of Okanagan red wine in the evenings. These drinks have the ability to discolour your teeth as well as the braces themselves.

To avoid getting cavities and discoloured teeth, use the special brushes that we give you to clean your mouth. We recommend you brush your teeth after every meal, if possible. If you have any other questions about oral hygiene, contact Dr. Scramstad or read our blog post about oral hygiene.

5. Fill your fridge with soft foods

You may experience discomfort when your braces are tightened or you start a new set of Invisalign aligners. Because of this, you’re going to want to stock up on soft foods.

Think smoothies, soups, oatmeal or even pureed fruits and vegetables. Cold treats like fruit popsicles and frozen blended smoothies will also soothe any pain you’re feeling.

Knowing what you should eat after tightening treatment allows you to focus on your to-do list and not the throbbing feeling in your mouth.

6. Relax

Now that you’ve decided to get adult braces, you can relax. The decision has been made and soon the treatment will begin. While you’re waiting to get your braces on, try to breathe deeply and listen to positive, calming music. This will help you to feel and know that you’re in safe hands.

Eventually, you’ll get used to the appearance of your braces and you’ll learn how to take the best care of them. Trust us, it will be worth it once you see your dazzling new smile. Not only will your coworkers love the transformation, but so will your family.

The time is now

You’ve been waiting so long to be able to take care of yourself. Now that your family is situated, their health and dentist needs have been met, it’s time to focus on you. To set up your appointment with Dr. Scramstad, contact us today. We’d be happy to help you through the adult braces process.
