The idea of getting braces can make some patients nervous, but, the thing is, so many people have to get them, including Hollywood celebrities!
We thought it’d be nice to remind you that even movie star celebrities in Hollywood get braces.
We’ve compiled a number of pop culture moments that include pictures of celebrities with braces or character sporting orthodontic braces. Some may be from the 80s, resulting in a more traditional, old-school look, but today’s teeth-straightening options are more attractive, comfortable and streamlined. This means, you won’t have to feel self-conscious about smiling while fixing your teeth.
Without further ado, here are 10 characters, singers and actors with braces showing off their hardware in TV shows and movies:
1. Brace Face
Now, if you didn’t grow up in the 2000s, you may not be familiar with this television show. Braceface was about an 8th grader with teenage problems on her mind and magical braces on her teeth. The show had a theme song that sticks in your head. If you watch an episode online, we promise you’ll be singing it all day long.
2. Katy Perry in “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)”
In 2011, Katy Perry released the song, “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” with a music video that starred Kathy Beth Terry. Kathy Beth is a fictional character played by Katy Perry who wore bulky metal braces, orthodontic headgear, thick-rimmed glasses and an outfit that’s unmistakable. While this isn’t technically one of the celebrities or actors with braces from a TV show or movie, the video did appear on televisions everywhere and Kathy Beth Terry became a household name after the video, which has more than 1,300,000 views, was released.
3. Drew Barrymore in Never Been Kissed
Another classic braces moment was in Never Been Kissed. Josie Geller, who was played by Drew Barrymore, looked oddly like Kathy Terry. Geller was very ‘80s with her metallic clothing and metal braces. Her braces were an accessory you can’t forget and, thankfully, they’re a far cry from the smaller, smoother brackets we use at Align Ortho!
4. Cindy Crawford in the Pepsi commercial
It’s not just singers and actors with braces, there are supermodels with braces too! Cindy Crawford starred in a commercial for Pepsi where she had metal braces on her teeth. Crawford posted this picture as a #ThrowBackThursday on her Twitter.
5. America Ferrara in Ugly Betty
Ugly Betty was an American comedy that revolves around the character Betty Suarez. Even with her questionable style, she lands a job at a prestigious fashion magazine. Betty is known for her adult braces. Sadly, the show was canceled but still has a strong following.
6. Ben Stiller in There’s Something About Mary
Ben Stiller played Ted Stroehmann in the romantic comedy There’s Something About Mary. It’s a classic love story where boy falls in love with girl, boy does something extremely embarrassing (the zipper incident), boy loses girl and, years later, is still in love with her. In the movie, Mary compliments Ted’s braces saying, “You know how I like braces.” We agree, Mary. We like braces too!
7. Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
In the film, we see a flashback of young Willy Wonka with braces and a massive orthodontic headgear contraption. If you have braces now, just be thankful orthodontic treatment has changed and these types of burdensome appliances aren’t commonly used, even if you do need braces for an overbite or underbite. On the bright side, Willy Wonka started out with braces headgear and ended up with a chocolate factory. Maybe braces are good luck after all.
8. Sean Astin in The Goonies
Mikey from The Goonies, played by Sean Astin, rocked braces in the cult-classic movie. Not only did Mikey have braces, but he was also the leader of the gang. Braces didn’t hold him back!
9. Lisa Simpson in The Simpsons
We couldn’t forget the episode where Lisa Simpson has to get braces that gave us the beloved “Dental plan. Lisa needs braces” scene. The episode started with Lisa having to wear an old-fashioned piece of braces headgear (like Willy Wonka) since the family’s dental plan was taken away. In the end, Homer gets the dental plan back and Lisa is given a set of clear braces that are almost invisible on her teeth.
10. Darla in Finding Nemo
Darla is the niece of Philip Sherman, the dentist in Finding Nemo, and another of the characters with braces in movies and TV shows to also have orthodontic headgear. Thankfully, Nemo doesn’t end up in Darla’s clutches.
Last, but not least, we thought we’d feature some of the other celebrities who have worn braces in the limelight – in real life and not just for a role. Tom Cruise decided to straighten his Hollywood smile as an adult. As with a number of actors with braces, he opted for clear braces and was seen smiling confidently as the paparazzi snapped his picture. e.
Other celebrities with braces and Invisalign, include Gwen Stefani, Kendall Jenner, Jaden Smith, Justin Bieber, Emma Watson, Prince Harry, Dakota Fanning, Faith Hill, Emma Stone, Ariel Winter, Miley Cyrus, Venus and Serena Williams, and Niall Horan.
While it might seem like braces will be a huge deal at first, most people will barely register you’re wearing them and you’ll forget you even have them on once you get acclimated. We offer several different types of braces at Align Ortho and both our metal braces and clear, ceramic braces are smaller and more comfortable than the braces from even a decade ago. Braces help straighten your teeth and align your bite and once they come off, you’ll feel like a star.
If you want to straighten your teeth without braces, Dr. Scramstad, a general dentist practicing orthodontics only, is also a Kelowna Invisalign dentist and offers both Invisalign and Invisalign Teen. Invisalign involves custom-made aligners, designed by Dr. Scramstad, that fit snugly over your teeth and are worn for 20-22 hours a day. These aligners use controlled force to move your teeth into the perfect Hollywood smile.
