4 Things to Consider Before Your Kid Gets Braces

Nov 03 / 2017

Getting braces as a kid is both nerve-wracking and exciting.

We’ve seen celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Gwyneth Paltrow, Emma Watson and Ryan Seacrest all go through Orthodontic treatment as a kid and now it’s your child’s turn.

To make it possible for your child to have a perfect bite and straight teeth in the future, please come and visit us at Align Ortho in Kelowna.

Are you curious to know what’s the deal with getting braces as a kid? Well, there are certain facts about braces that every parent should be aware of before having them put on your child. The following are some noteworthy facts and considerations when it comes to Orthodontics and kids.

1. There’s a right time for treatment

Every mouth is different and certain teeth and bite conditions call for different treatments. As a child, it’s important to visit Dr. James Scramstad at a young age. While Orthodontic treatment can enhance a smile at any age, it’s recommended to visit an Orthodontic provider by the age of 7.  We like to see our patients early so we can monitor the development of their bite and possibly head off any issues that could become worse over time.  Not all patients will require early (Phase one) treatment.

The advantages of phase one treatment are:

  •  Creating room for crowded, erupting teeth
  •  Creating facial symmetry through influencing jaw growth
  •  Reducing the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
  •  Reducing the need for tooth removal
  •  Reducing treatment time with braces

Untreated bad bites can result in a variety of problems such as:

  •  Crowded teeth leading to poor oral hygiene, tooth decay and/or gum disease
  •  Protruding teeth susceptible to accidental chipping
  •  Cross bites resulting in unfavorable growth and uneven tooth wear
  •  Open bites resulting in tongue-thrusting habits and speech impediments

Dr. Scramstad uses early treatment to regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches, gain space for permanent teeth, avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions, reduce the likelihood of impacted teeth and to correct thumb-sucking.

If your child is over the age of 7, don’t worry, contact Align Ortho today and we’ll set your family up with a free consultation to discuss your options. You can also download our exclusive content offer - it’s a comparison guide to the options available at Align Ortho. We discuss each option and the pros and cons associated with each.

2. Braces are an investment

One of the first things a parent asks us when they arrive at Align Ortho is how much braces cost. It’s a question that isn’t able to be easily answered because each set of braces is different, depending on the child, the Orthodontic problem and the length of time needed for braces.

At Align Ortho, we offer payment plans with 0% interest, so you can get treatment underway without a large down payment.

We also offer discounts for people getting braces. If you’re going to pay for your child’s braces in full, you will receive an 8% discount on your invoice.

The second option we offer is related to your whole family.  Align Ortho offers a discount to the multiple members of the same family receiving Orthodontic treatment.  We will waive the initial patient records and X-ray fees in these cases.

3. Pick your Orthodontic provider wisely

Booking your braces consultation with the right Orthodontic provider is a very important step. We know your child’s teeth are important, and finding the right person to help eliminate their Orthodontic problems is necessary.

Dr. James Scramstad’s father (Dr. Don Scramstad) started Align Ortho here in Kelowna back in 1981 and spent the last 30 years straightening smiles in the Okanagan.

James wanted to continue the family tradition after graduating from OKM Secondary, James went to the University of Alberta to obtain his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Dental Surgery degrees.  Dr. James started working full time at Align in 1996 and has recently taken the practice over from his dad.

Dr. Scramstad has been an Invisalign Premier Provider since 2008, and is an active member of the:

  • Canadian Dental Association
  • BC College of Dental Surgeons
  • Kelowna & District Dental Society

Dr. James Scramstad takes the time to get to know his patients and the root cause of their Orthodontic problems. He wants everyone leaving with an ear-to-ear smile.

4. Your kid will change following braces

This is the exciting part about braces. Once your child has gone through treatment and has had their braces removed, you’re going to notice a change within them.

You will notice that your child is smiling more, showing off their teeth and not hiding their smile behind their hands.

A study of children as young as eight showed that they became happier, were less anxious and had more self-esteem after having braces put on.

Professor Kevin O’Brien, the man who led the research, said that kids also felt like they were teased less and had fewer negative comments about their teeth.

It’s our hope that when your child is fitted for braces at Align Ortho that they will experience a boost of self-confidence and self-esteem, all while getting their perfect smile.
