Why The Waterpik Flosser is the Best Way to Floss with Braces

Jan 05 / 2018

It’s January and that means a lot of people have new year’s resolutions. Included on your list should be flossing more regularly.

We know you probably hate flossing, we hear that a lot. How many times have you gone to floss and your gums start bleeding and the circulation is cut off from tightening the dental floss around your fingers? Probably too many times to count.

At Align Ortho, we understand the hate for flossing, although we know it’s a mandatory thing to have better oral hygiene. While flossing is needed, Dr. James Scramstad provides his patients with Waterpik to help ease them into the world of flossing. We’re working on turning the hate into a general like for cleaning your teeth, one Waterpik at a time!

It’s not easy to have braces and have to floss between all of the wires. You may even be thinking “How do you floss with braces?”. We’re here to answer that question and let you know why the Waterpik is our answer.

What is the Waterpik?

The Waterpik is an easy and effective way to floss without the string. It’s easy to use and does all the work for you with the use of high-powered water. It’s the easiest way to floss with braces and takes less than one minute. It’s an effective way to floss with braces because it removes plaque and debris where traditional brushing and flossing can’t reach.

The Waterpik uses water to get in between the teeth, allowing for food to be removed without the need of dental floss. It is used to address specific dental needs including cleaning braces and Orthodontics, treating periodontal pockets and cleaning implants and any dental work done such as crowns, bridges and veneers.

Why does Align Ortho recommend the Waterpik?

Dr. Scramstad knows that many of his patients don’t enjoy flossing. But, he knows that you have to floss when you have braces (and when you don’t), which is why he recommends this alternative. The Waterpik should be an addition to dental floss. Clinical studies have shown that the Waterpik allows patients with braces to floss regularly, with little hardship. The Waterpik is:

  3. Start with the lowest pressure setting, lean over the sink, place the tip in your mouth

  4. Aim the tip at the gumline

  5. Floss

  6. When finished, turn unit off and use the tip eject button to remove the tip

You should use your Waterpik every day after you brush your teeth. This final step will allow you to have better gum and tooth health and it will help once your braces are removed. As we mentioned above, the Waterpik shouldn’t completely eliminate dental floss. It should be used as an easy addition to your oral health routine.
