It’s been drilled into our brains to brush our teeth at least two times a day, preferably three times.
But, what’s not talked about is brushing your teeth with braces on until you’re in the dentist’s chair and your Orthodontic provider is putting them on.
Because of this, we wanted to write a blog post about the best way to clean teeth with braces. We wanted to share with you the best toothbrush for braces and how to stop from getting yellow teeth after braces.
We’re sharing our secrets with you today.
To start, if you brush your teeth properly while you have your braces on, your teeth will not turn yellow. If you’re not paying close attention to your teeth during your Orthodontic treatment, yellow teeth and staining are possibilities.
Stay away from teeth whitening treatments while you're undergoing Orthodontic treatment. That's better saved until after your braces come off if you wish to whiten your teeth.
To eliminate the risk of needing teeth whitening when your braces are off, follow these tips.
With all the brackets and wires around your teeth, it’s easy for plaque to sneak up and build a home in hard-to-reach places. That’s why it’s so important for you to brush properly every single day. Not just brush, but brush properly. We’re going to underline that for you to show you just how important it is.
When you don’t brush properly, the plaque is left on your teeth, which causes them to decay, which causes the yellow colour.
To clean your teeth properly with braces on consider these things:
Rinse your mouth out with water before you start brushing
Rinse your toothbrush under hot water to begin
Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums
Move the brush back and forth in short strokes. Remember to brush between the wiring and the teeth.
Brush for at least 2 minutes
Brush your tongue after brushing your teeth
Top quality electric toothbrushes are clinically shown to remove more plaque and achieve healthier gums compared to manual toothbrushes. There are so many options for the best toothbrush for braces, but we have a suggestion for you.
Dr. James Scramstad of Align Ortho suggests buying a Sonicare toothbrush.
If you’re not looking to buy an electric toothbrush, you can keep your manual one. We recommend that you change your toothbrush every month or two depending on how worn out it is.
One of the best ways to clean teeth when your braces are on is by using a Waterpik flosser.
All of our braces patients receive a new Waterpik on the day they get their braces. This is like a mini-power sprayer for your teeth! It is super cool and will help you keep your teeth and braces sparkling clean. A good place to use it is in the shower - just make sure you dry the Waterpik after each use (and don’t leave it in the shower, please)
Other important tips for keeping your teeth clean when you have braces:
Keep your equipment clean - This goes for your toothbrush and flosser
Say no to tobacco - This turns your teeth yellow
Stick to healthy foods - Diet plays an important role when keeping your teeth clean
Rinse your mouth after every drink or snack - A good idea to brush after every meal
Once your braces are off, you need to continue brushing your teeth. Do it the exact same way you did it with your braces on.
Continue to use your Sonicare toothbrush, floss every day with dental floss and your Waterpik, rinse your mouth often and never miss a dental checkup and cleaning.
Maintaining a healthy mouth is important during Orthodontic treatment and after. Once your braces are off, you will have a retainer to look after.
